TNP Receives Grant From Somebody's Beloved Fund

11.09.2021

Tuesday Night Project is honored to receive a $500 grant through Somebody’s Beloved Fund, a project created through MILCK, a long time friend of the TNP space. This project was created along with MILCK’s song, Somebody’s Beloved ft Bipolar Sunshine, to honor Tamika Palmer and her daughter, Breonna Taylor, along with all of those we have lost to racial injustice.

We’re excited to continue to see MILCK grow as an independent artist. Her latest single, Steady As We Go, reminds us to take it one step at a time in our fight for social justice and equality.

TN Labs 1 | Recap

Heya, Mya here! I’m Tuesday Night Project’s Volunteer Co-Coordinator and resident zinester (though I can’t claim that title all alone; we have multiple zinesters on staff). My TN Labs workshop, The Zine Zone w/ Mya, ended last month. As each of our series wraps, we’ll be sharing some of the behind-the-scenes and highlights from the workshops!

First off, TN Labs is an offering for you: combining the many skills of Tuesday Night Project’s staff with our ethos of art+community. We have some awesome workshops in-store, from food to DnD and the artistic process. That being said, The Zine Zone was our trial run! A way to figure out an online workshop series. I want to thank everyone who helped us put it together, including our lovely staff and all our wonderful attendees.

So, what are zines? Zines are small-scale publications created by you, not a book publisher. They’ve evolved as people’s access to printing did, from typewriters to home printers to the internet. And because they’re a much easier avenue of self-publishing, zines have been used throughout the 1900s and 2000s by marginalized people to express themselves, communicate with others, and organize their communities.

The Zine Zone’s focus was on one-page zines: zines that only use one sheet of paper and minimal office supplies. I believe zines are best when they’re simple, experimental, and fun (though that’s my own philosophy!). The hope was that attendees could mess up and try different things out — using one piece of paper they could make one, even two, or three different zines.

And folks ran with it! As a facilitator, my role was pretty simple: throw a zine format at people and see what they did with it. There were SO many creative zines made during each workshop. Folks played with words, color, form, even topography! I hope if you’re reading this, you’ll try making a zine too.

Below, you’ll find a link to a Google folder with each session’s materials, including instructional graphics, slides, and video. Share your zines using the hashtag #TNZineZone!

If you missed out on The Zine Zone, we have more exciting workshops coming your way. Next month is TN Labs: All Things Food, facilitated by Sophia Chang! And if you want to make a zine with me, I’ll be facilitating more zine-making with traci kato-kiriyama during Tea & Letter Writing this October.

TNP Introduces Updated Look

06.24.2021

Tuesday Night Project started over two decades ago with our flagship program, Tuesday Night Cafe. Now in our twenty second year, we present a range of programs including Tea and Letter Writing and TN Labs. Today, we’re excited to share a new visual identity that reflects our community and ever-growing work!

Over the years, we’ve had a number of wonderful identity marks designed by TNP staff, most recently Byron Dote and Candace Kita. This new mark, designed by TN family member Yosuke Murakami, plays on the DIY-spirit of their work while looking toward the future with new opportunities for textures and colors.

We went through an internal process that allowed us to explore our identity. We were drawn to organic forms, layered textures, and connected shapes -- all of which draw on our values as an organization.

Murakami remarks, “My approach to designing this logo was about leaning into the story TNP was trying to tell. There are so many layers, textures, and movement of the lines that go into the depth of the stories that TNP has, and I wanted to capture that in this logo.” We love how he was able to intertwine symbols and textures to represent the intersectionality of our work and how flexible the logo could be for future programs.

We thought about the types of relationships we’ve built with our community, identified icons within our spaces, and used our mission to create a meaningful and accurate representation of our organization. We felt that this variety of colors could more accurately represent our diverse programming moving forward.

Ultimately, we aim to be the same organization rooted in art+community but with an updated style. Keep checking for our new logo, these new colors, and more in the coming months!

Bandcamp Isn’t Taking A Cut From Purchases Today So Here’s A List Of TNC Artists To Support

Earlier this week, indie music marketplace Bandcamp announced that, to support artists affected by COVID-19, they will be waiving revenue share on all purchases today, Friday April 30th. For any purchase you make today on Bandcamp, 100% of your purchase will go to the artists.

We’ve compiled a (mostly complete) list of Bandcamp profiles belonging to artists who have performed at Tuesday Night Cafe over the years. We’re probably missing a few folks so please contact us at contact@tuesdaynightproject.org if you don’t see yourself or your favorite TNC artist’s page here!

TNP COVID-19 Response and Update

To our Tuesday Night Project family,

For the past two decades, we have been grateful to hold space for our communities and our city. By coming together through community partnerships, long-term artist support, and especially our flagship Tuesday Night Cafe series, we’ve found comfort in gathering and a sense of togetherness through hard times.

As we are all experiencing now, the world has changed drastically over the past few months. Though circumstances are shifting every day, our number one priority as an organization has always been to guard the safety and health of our community. With “safer at home” orders expected to continue and to do our part in flattening the curve by keeping spatial distance from each other, we have decided to postpone the 2020 Tuesday Night Cafe season indefinitely.

With that in mind, we are deeply inspired by our community of artists who have risen to the challenge and created space for sharing in these challenging times. We are exploring ways to meet our mission through new ideas in live streaming, digital collaboration, and hosted online gathering. Through our TNTalks initiative, we hosted the “Tea & Letter Writing” space online and will continue to do so on a monthly basis. Keep watching our social channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and newsletter for updates.

We recognize that creating space for art+community right now is a necessity but also a privilege, and thus a responsibility. We feel a great deal of gratitude, concern, and love for the healthcare workers putting themselves at risk as they fight this virus with limited safety supplies and access to relief. We are likewise thinking about the restaurant, grocery store, agriculture, and service industry folks who are also putting themselves at risk and keeping us all nourished in a desperate time.

We are also aware of the need to support our fellow local arts and community organizations at this time where bread-&-butter festivals, events, and fundraisers are facing major adjustments, postponements, or cancellations altogether.

If you are so able, please consider supporting your closest organizations, local mutual aid funds, and essential service providers through monetary donations, medical supply contributions, and  continued patronage of independent businesses.

Finally, as we mourn with those who are mourning and ready ourselves for darker moments to come, we reflect on the power of our shared humanity and are resolute in our commitment to each other. We look forward to affirming that connection again soon.

With love and hope,

Your Tuesday Night Project Family

A Venerable Showcase in Little Tokyo

on The Frame, July 9, 2019

ANDREA GUTIERREZ

Tuesday Night Café is the longest-running Asian American performance series in the United States. For more than twenty years the series has provided a stage in L.A.’s Little Tokyo for musicians, singers, poets and other performers to try new material. But TNC is more than just another venue for a gig — it’s also deeply rooted in community, collaboration, and a sense of history. The Frame’s Andrea Gutierrez has the story.

Community Driven Art Brings LA Artists and People Together

The sky had begun to darken, but warmth still abounded as we watched performers bathed in yellow-stage lights bring an outdoor space surrounded by business towers and busy streets come to life. The wailing of a distant siren, car horns, and the sound of tires against rough pavement found harmony with the voices of slam poets, singers, and other Asian American performers.

Tuesday Night Project Celebrates 20 Years of Free Art and Community Revitalization in DTLA

LOS ANGELES – Tuesday Night Project reaches its landmark 20th year of art and community building in 2018. Its flagship program, Tuesday Night Cafe, will begin its 20th season on April 3, 2018. Tuesday Night Cafe is a free public arts and performance series in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, presenting new and original work from the Asian American and Los Angeles communities. Since its inception in 1999, Tuesday Night Cafe has become the oldest Asian American mic series in the country, and one of the longest running free public art series in Los Angeles.

“It’s significant that Tuesday Night Cafe has continued to grow for so long, but the intention and reasoning for that continual growth is not lost on any of us,” says Tuesday Night Cafe producer/lead curator Sean Miura. “There’s always been a need for a space like ours in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Asian America and season after season we see that need evolve.”

Tuesday Night Project was principally created to address two major issues. The first was the need for a space where Asian American artists of all disciplines (including music, poetry, writing, dance, visual art, performance art, and comedy) could meet, collaborate, and share their work. The second was a need to revitalize the neighborhood of Little Tokyo by drawing in visitors and creating public programming for the community. Through partnerships with community organizations including Little Tokyo Service Center, Visual Communications, and East West Players, Tuesday Night Project is able to produce the Tuesday Night Cafe to fulfill those needs.

“Tuesday Night Project has always been for and fueled by the community,” says Tuesday Night Project Director traci kato-kiriyama. “We began in 1999 as a team of theatre artists, musicians, community organizers and local residents and staff rooted in Little Tokyo. We have always been all-volunteer run and are lucky to be primarily funded directly by our generous audience. We will continue onward, operating on the philosophy that people are each other’s greatest resource.”

Twenty years later, Tuesday Night Project continues to grow. Beyond Tuesday Night Café, Tuesday Night Project also runs touring programs to colleges (TN-on-Tour), community workshops on topics such as wellness and solidarity (TN Talks), and a number of visual and audio media projects.

Tuesday Night Cafe’s 20th season will begin on April 3, 2018 at the Aratani Courtyard/Union Center for the Arts, 120 Judge John Aiso St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. More information about Tuesday Night Project and its programs can be found at: www.tuesdaynightproject.org
